An Israeli military spokesperson said that forces opened fire with warning shots at some people who were approaching the northern border, which the Israeli army considers a combat and live fire zone. He also declared that the victim's leg was targeted in one of these shots.

However, according to the local government health services authority, more than 80 people have been injured in similar circumstances since the Israel's blockade of Gaza started three years ago.

The collection of stone and other materials is one of the few regular sources of income for workers in the strip, due to Israel prohibiting the entry of reconstruction materials such as iron re-bar, stone and cement.
